Why avoidance persists
Avoidance often starts as an understandable attempt to reduce distress. Stepping back from a feared situation, a difficult conversation, or an uncertain decision can bring immediate relief.
The problem is that relief can teach the brain that the situation was dangerous, making it harder to approach the same issue next time. Effective treatment looks closely at that cycle and develops manageable ways to re-engage.
